Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is the statutory title of qualified accountants in the United States who have passed the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination and have met additional state education and experience requirements for certification as a CPA. Individuals who have passed the Exam but have not either accomplished the required on-the-job experience or have previously met it but in the meantime have lapsed their continuing professional education are, in many states, permitted the designation "CPA Inactive" or an equivalent phrase. In most U.S. states, only CPAs who are licensed are able to provide to the public attestation (including auditing) opinions on financial statements. The exceptions to this rule are Arizona, Kansas, North Carolina and Ohio where, although the "CPA" designation is restricted, the practice of auditing is not. Many states have a lower tier of accountant qualification (below that of CPA), usually entitled "Public Accountant" (with designatory letters "PA"). However the majority of states have closed the designation "Public Accountant" to new entrants, with only about 10 states continuing to offer the designation. Many PAs belong to the National Society of (Public) Accountants. Many states prohibit the use of the designations "Certified Public Accountant" or "Public Accountant" (or the abbreviations "CPA" or "PA") by a person who is not certified as a CPA or PA in that state. As a result, in many circumstances, an out-of-state CPA is restricted from using the CPA designation or designatory letters until a license or certificate from that state is obtained. Texas additionally prohibits the use of the designations "accountant" and "auditor" by a person not certified as a Texas CPA, unless that person is a CPA in another state, a non-resident of Texas, and otherwise meets the requirements for practice in Texas by out-of-state CPA firms and practitioners. Many other countries also use the title CPA to designate local public accountants. The equivalent in formerly British countries is the chartered accountant. From Wikipedia under the

My advice is to also take a number of classes in economics and finance. At some point in your education, you will realize that the skill set for mathematics and accounting are very different. To do well in Math, you need to think logically and creatively. To do well at accounting, you need to be able to follow rules without questioning their validity and be able to memorize these rules & know when to use them. The skill set for Finance and Economics is similar to that for Math. If you are one of those people who have both skill sets, you will be very marketable. If you prefer one to the other, your education will allow you to decide to go on to… [cont.] Answered by Ranto - Fri Apr 18 11:45:52 2008 How do you become a certified public accountant(CPA) in the united states and how long does it take???? Q. How do you become a certified public accountant(CPA) in the united states and how long does it take??? Asked by colombianboy92 - Mon May 7 06:49:34 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. You may sit for exam as a candidate for any state, but the requirements vary for each state. All states require a 4 year degree with a concentration in Accounting. Most states require a fifth year of education (aka, the 150 hour requirement) to sit for exam. To become a CPA, you must pass all 4 parts of the CPA exam within an 18 month window. Sections can be taken one at a time, but if you don't pass all 4 within the 18 month window, you will start to lose credit for sections & have to retake them. The length of time it takes to pass all 4 sections really just depends on the person taking them (I did it in 6 months). Not all states have work requirements (as mentioned by person in last post). But for the most part, the work… [cont.] Answered by Sharon - Mon May 7 09:39:00 2007 do Certified Public Accountant make alot of money?
Q. and how many years of college do they need to do?what is there average salary ? Asked by sly4298 - Wed Aug 27 23:38:33 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. The answer to your question is it depends on what you do once you obtain your CPA. The CPA is a designation, not a career. To obtain a CPA, most states require 5 years of college and two years of work experience in public accounting prior to sitting for the exam. As an accounting major in college, many choose to work at one of the "Big 4" Ernst & Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte, KPMG. I believe starting salaries are between $45,000 and $55,000 depending on your location (Manhattan being higher than Kansas City). The career path for most of the Big 4 is two to four years before going to work for a corporation. It is very reasonable with four years of audit or other experience at a Big 4 you'll achieve a six figure salary at a… [cont.] Answered by My2scents - Fri Aug 29 11:12:31 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Certified Public Accountant" Shooting suspect must stand trial
