Why preference to doctoral students?
Q. I want to get a masters in biochemistry and then go to med school, but most schools I've looked into say that although they offer the masters program, they very rarely admit students into it if they aren't planning on pursuing the PhD. What would it take to get into the masters program, and be one of those "rare" admissions, without planning on getting a PhD?

A. Different programs in different countries/states/regions have different procedures. It's really a cultural thing rather than any particular logic. In the US for example, physics is typically straight to PhD - it's a consequence of where funding is available and the nature of the research. Biology on the other hand typically has MS's. Canada, in contrast, most PhDs have a MScs across the board. Then, UK is commonly straight to PhD across the board. If you really want to just do a Master's, you might want to look around a bit more in other states/countries/regions. In any case, don't let what they say deter you that much. At worst, an application will set you back some time and money - and hey, they might end up telling you they'll… [cont.]

A. That's how I'd interpret it. It also sounds too good to be true. I'd check with the university before you make any plans based on this. I understand that it applies to candidates for a PhD or above. I don't think it has anything to do with studying medicine.

Is this true about what the students receive in a doctoral program?
Q. I was researching some information on a doctoral program since a friend I knew went into one last year, and was wondering if anyone else can corroborate what I found: - the tuition is waived for the student during their entire term - the student receives compensation while working as a research assistant or T.A. - the student receives free room and board at a dorm - the student receives an annual stipend to help pay for other costs - the student has to maintain a certain GPA in order to keep said benefits - one drawback being that the student sacrifices several years of good income while attending the program. Wow, free tuition and free roam and board while getting a great degree, what more can a student ask for. (And here I was… [cont.]

A. I am not sure those rules apply to every college. I do know that Colleges like the University of Pennsylvania offer students a certain amount of money a year, say $20,000 and they dont have to pay for tuition. This is why it's so hard to get into a doctoral program at very prestigious universities. Why do colleges do this? 1) Doctoral degree students are basically keeping a college alive by conducting research and drawing out conclusions. Colleges are research facilities as well as learning facilities and many doctoral degree students conduct research. 2) Im not too sure why MBA students dont get this, but I think it's because MBA students are usually not as involved with the University because they dont double as TAs or conduct… [cont.]

A. The ones I've been to didn't pay too well, but then, the cost of living in Montana is much less than the cost of living in Berkeley. Think about that when looking at stipends - also, cost of food, gas, and how much it would cost to fly home. But there are always fellowships, grants, and scholarships to fall back on, not to mention loans.

A. In that event, if the professor has any ethics about him/her, he/she grades the dissertation as professor of record and the degree issues from the professor's original university. Alternatively, if the original professor is too lacking in ethics to do this, it would be benevolent of his/her replacement to take over the dissertation advisor position (and approve the original topic) but he is under no obligation to do so.

Which is better for a business card - "Ph.D. student" or "Doctoral Student"?
Q. My department is actually making us get these made - they are taking us to a conference overseas - yet there has been an extensive argument on how the business cards should be labelled. Obviously one can't put "Ph.D. candidate" unless one is actually in candidacy (there can be serious backlash for what is basically lying), and "pre-candidacy" obviously won't cut it. The faculty is leaving it up to students what to put, so I thought I'd get some input from you all.

A. It should be two seperate words, post doctoral is not a pair of words so immediately unified as to be hyphenated, like say... jump-rope, for instance.

doctoral student with procrastination problem needs help!?
Q. I'm a doctoral student with a serious procrastination problem. I already know why I do it (perfectionism, easily distracted, obsessive tendencies).,, I love to read, explore, and research all the random things you can find on the internet.. i'm addicted to checking email and playing around on friendster and youtube. but then time passes by with the paper undone. My question for you all is... what are some time management "tricks"? For example, I have found it helpful to set my clock 20 minutes fast, plug in the deadlines one week earlier in my planner, join study groups b/c they force me to start earlier... any others would be really helpful!
Asked by koh - Wed Mar 14 01:38:21 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You can apply your obsession to your studies. Since you are a doctoral student, you should have a passion for your subject. There are millions of random bits of information available for the subject you are analyzing. You can become more knowledgeable than your professors if you apply your perfectionist tendencies to your subject. If you can't channel that energy into your studies, you need to think hard about the career path you are seeking. That passion needs to be there.

Q. I am writing my doctoral dissertation on this topic and am seeking comment and opinion on the topic.
Asked by fanored - Wed Dec 31 10:11:15 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. i haven't taken the act yet but since your gpa is pretty much the average of all your grades for high school i would assume it would be lower for students that are more involved in other activities because they would have less time to dedicate to studying. but it also depends on the type of student doing the activities, those who are super involved in other stuff tend to be the over achiever type to begin with and may very well have higher gpa's because they take no down time for themselves and are always working on something or other.

How to become a high school teacher?
Q. hi I am currently a doctoral student in music. I want to become a high school music teacher. I am wondering, do I need to go back to undergraduate and get a music education degree? Or how can I get licensed?
Asked by Cindy16 - Wed Apr 30 18:59:46 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Licensing depends on your state. Check with your college education department for requirements. You might have to take a few hours of basic education courses, but that would probably be it. Another idea would be to contact your state education department. Since you'll have a doctorate in music, you might be able to be licensed immediately.
